Markham voters will be able to cast their ballot online or in person from October 12 - 22, 2018, for the following offices:

  • Mayor (You may vote for 1 candidate)

  • Regional Councillor (You may vote for up to 4 candidates)

  • Ward Councillor (You may vote for 1 candidate)

  • York Region District School Board Trustee*

  • York Catholic District School Board Trustee*

  • Conseil scolaire Viamonde Trustee*

  • Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir Trustee*

*You may vote for 1 candidate for the school board you support.

Register to vote

You must be on the Municipal Voters' List in order to vote during Voting Days (October 12-22). If you were on previous Federal or Provincial voters’ lists, it does not mean you are on the Municipal Voters’ List. 

Here is how you can register to vote:

  • Online tool until 7 PM on October 22;
  • In person at the front desk at any Markham Public Library branch until October 19; or
  • In person at any Voter Assistance Centre during Voting Days (October 12-19 & 22)  

ID Requirements:

  • Photo ID; and
  • Proof of Canadian Citizenship; and
  • Proof of Markham residency or non-resident eligibility

Once you are on the Municipal Voters' List, you will receive your Voter Information Package (VIP). This will have all the information you need to cast your ballot during Voting Days (October 12-22, 2018), including your Online Voting PIN.

Please allow 24 hours for your request to be processed. On Final Voting Day, online requests will be processed within 1-2 business hours until 7 PM. After this time, you must go to a Voter Assistance Centre.

Who can vote
You can vote in the 2018 Markham Municipal Election if you are:
  • A Canadian citizen; and

  • 18 years of age or older; and

  • A resident of the City of Markham; or

  • A non-resident who is, or whose spouse is, an owner or tenant of land in the City of Markham; and

  • Not prohibited from voting by law

Note: You may only vote once, no matter how many voting days there are or how many properties you own or rent in Markham.

  • Vote anywhere, anytime from a computer or mobile device;

  • In person on October 22 at any Voter Assistance Centre, using an election tablet; or

  • On a public computer at any Markham Public Library branch (during operating hours)

Note: No paper ballots available on Final Voting Day (October 22).

Voter ID Requirements

When to vote
Eligible voters can vote in the 2018 Markham Municipal Election from October 12 at 10 AM EDT until October 22 at 8 PM EDT.
Which school board do I support
In the 2018 Markham Municipal Election, eligible voters will be casting their ballot for one of the following school boards:
  • York Region District School Board Trustee
    Also referred to as English Public (EP). Anyone can vote for this school board.

    Note: If your children are in French Immersion in the Public system, you support this school board. 
  • York Catholic District School Board Trustee
    Also referred to as English Separate (ES). You must personally be Roman Catholic to vote for this school board, regardless if your partner is Roman Catholic or if your children attend an English Separate school.

    Note: If your children are in French Immersion in the Catholic system and you meet the qualifications above, you support this school board. 
  • Conseil scolaire Viamonde Trustee
    Also referred to as French Public (FP). You must have French Language Education Rights to vote for this school board.

    Note: This does not include French Immersion or French as a second language.
  • Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir Trustee
    Also referred to as French Separate (FS). You must personally be Roman Catholic and have French Language Education Rights to vote for this school board, regardless if your partner is Roman Catholic or if your children attend a French Catholic school.

    Note: This does not include French Immersion or French as a second language.

Additional Information:

  • A non-resident voter, who is an owner or tenant of residential property in the municipality, is entitled to vote for the school board office in that municipality.  
  • A non-resident voter, who is an owner or tenant of commercial property in the municipality, is not entitled to vote for any school board offices in that municipality. 

When you get your Voter Information Package (VIP) check to make sure you are supporting the correct school board.  

Voter Assistance Centres & Accessibility

If you do not have access to a computer or mobile device to vote online or you require assistance, visit any Voter Assistance Centre across Markham during Voting Days.

Free parking available at all locations (Cornell Community Centre & Library parking garage included). Locations are fully accessible.

What’s new
  • Voters are able to register, update and confirm their information on the Municipal Voters’ List using an online tool until October 22 at 7 PM
  • Vote online anywhere, anytime from a computer or mobile device during Voting Days (October 12-22)
  • Vote in person using a paper ballot at any Voter Assistance Centre from October 12-19 (during operating hours)

Rights as a voter
As an eligible voter, you have the right to:
  • Vote privately and free of interference;

  • Vote if you are in line at any Voter Assistance Centre across Markham prior to the 8 PM close of the polls on October 22;

  • Vote without your Voter Information Package if your name is on the Municipal Voters’ List and you provide valid ID that shows your name (If you do not have ID, you can complete the Statutory Declaration confirming your identity);

  • Vote without a Voter Information Package if your name is NOT on the Voters List, provided you have valid ID that shows your name, date of birth, citizenship and qualifying address AND complete the appropriate form;

  • Receive assistance while voting;

  • Have a sign language interpreter, or other interpreter, with you when you vote;

  • Decline your ballot if you do not wish to vote for any of the candidates;

  • Vote in a location that is accessible;

  • Ask your employer for up to three hours off work without penalty to vote on October 22 if your work schedule does not allow you three consecutive hours while polls are open; and

  • Ask Markham Municipal Election staff to be removed from the Municipal Voters’ List.
